Castle New Blumberg

Castle New Blumberg
Andreas Rockstein Public domain

Burg Neu-Blumberg, also known as Räuberschlössle, stands on the Nägelefelsen near Göschweiler, a district of Löffingen. It is the remains of a hilltop castle set in the Wutach Gorge. The site overlooks steep wooded slopes and the rushing river below. Porphyr rock forms the base of the former stronghold. Few masonry traces survive today, yet the dramatic setting remains impressive.

The castle’s history begins in the late 14th century when Eberhard von Blumberg took the name from the new fortress. In 1452 Jakob von Bern sold the already ruined site to Heinrich von Almshofen. The Fürstenberg family granted it as a fief in 1473. During the Peasants’ War of 1525 the castle was destroyed. By the 17th century it had become a refuge for outlaws, giving rise to its nickname.

Visitors reach the site along woodland paths that climb beside the gorge. The rocky outcrop offers wide views over the treetops and down into the gorge. Interpretive signs explain the castle’s origins and the theories of historian Karl Siegfried Bader. The air carries the sound of the river and birdsong from the surrounding forest.
