Rahlingsburg
The Rahlingsburg is a vanished medieval motte near Borgstede in Lower Saxony. A low earthen mound, about two metres high, marks the site of a square tower that once stood there in the 15th century. The mound is surrounded by the remains of a three-metre-wide ditch, still visible on the northern and southern sides. Fragments of brick, roof tiles and pottery lie scattered across the flattened top, showing that a stone building once crowned the hill. A written record from 1445 may refer to the same stronghold. North of the main mound lies a lower bailey, its old defensive ditch now a damp hollow in the meadow. Scattered boulders hint at former buildings that stood there long ago. The whole place speaks of a small but solid fortress built to control the surrounding flatlands. Archaeologists have recognised the site as a classic example of a motte-and-bailey castle typical of the region. Visitors walk across open farmland to reach the quiet grassy mound. The ditches still frame the hill clearly, giving a sense of how the defences once worked. A few bricks and tiles lie where the tower once rose, while the northern hollow shows where the outer ward once stood. The site offers a quiet glimpse into the 15th-century landscape, far from modern roads and noise.
