Burg Wegberg

Burg Wegberg stands in the centre of Wegberg, a town in North Rhine-Westphalia. Built in the 14th century, it was once a water-filled fortress but only fragments remain today. The main building dates from the late 19th century and now houses a hotel-restaurant. Since 1985 the structure has been officially protected as a monument. Its name once included ‘Haus Potz’, a reminder of its medieval past. The site once guarded the meeting of two small streams, the Fußbach and the Beecker Bach. The brick manor house has two storeys above a high stone base. Its slate roof carries a small bell turret in the centre. Nine window rows are marked by Blaustein sills, the middle row projecting slightly under a stepped gable. A double flight of steps leads to the central door. South-west of the house rises a square brick tower from the 17th century. It crowns a round-arched gateway and wears a low pyramid roof. Visitors walk past the tower into a gravel courtyard. The manor’s neogothic details catch the eye, from the stone window sills to the turret bell. Inside, the hotel-restaurant occupies the refurbished rooms. The surrounding moat still curves around the southern edge of the site, giving the place a quiet, sheltered air.
