Little Orme

The Little Orme rises above Llandudno Bay in north Wales as a rugged headland with two summits. It stands at the eastern end of the bay, facing the larger Great Orme across the curve of sand. Public footpaths wind over its slopes and along the cliffs, leading walkers to the higher summit where a trig point marks the highest point. The land drops steeply to the sea in places, forming cliffs that challenge rock climbers. On the lower slopes, small fields show the remains of 19th-century limestone quarrying near Porth Dyniewyd. The headland’s wild character contrasts with the developed Great Orme nearby. The site holds traces of human activity from the Mesolithic period onwards. Archaeologists have found Neolithic cave deposits and an Iron Age hoard of Celtic metalwork in its caves. In the 16th century, a recusant squire and his chaplain printed the first book in Wales here during Elizabeth I’s persecution of Catholics. Later, during the Second World War, the Royal Artillery used the headland for target practice, leaving gun emplacements that were removed by the 1960s. Today, the North Wales Bird Trust and North Wales Wildlife Trust protect its seabird colonies and rare plants. Visitors find a landscape shaped by nature and history. The Rhiwledyn Nature Reserve on the north-west side protects important habitats for European Shag and Common Guillemot. Angel Bay below is a good place to watch seals haul out on the rocks. The North Wales Path crosses the summit, offering wide views over the bay and the Conwy estuary. Quiet paths lead through old quarry workings and farmland, while the cliffs attract experienced climbers. The ruined medieval chapel of Blessed Mary of Penrhyn stands at the foot of the headland, a reminder of the area’s long past.
