Betzenberg
The Betzenberg is a 499.5-metre hill in the Schönbuch, a hilly woodland area of the Keuper uplands in southern Germany. It stands near Glashütte, a small village on the edge of Waldenbuch in the districts of Böblingen and Esslingen. The summit lies 1.7 kilometres south-south-west of Glashütte, reached by a forest path called Dettenhäuser Sträßle. The hilltop is crossed by the boundary between Böblingen and Esslingen districts, which turns south at the summit before ending in the Schaich valley. About 1.5 kilometres west-south-west of this point, where three district borders meet, the land drops into the valley below. The hill carries traces of early settlement and woodland history. A Hallstatt-period burial mound and a Roman cemetery have been found on its slopes. A late-Celtic square earthwork, a temple enclosure with a wooden shrine and deep sacrificial shafts, stands 1.8 kilometres east-north-east of Dettenhausen near the Braunäcker fields. Three giant sequoias planted after 1880 grow together beside the Waldhütte Weißes Häusle, and another nearby specimen is the tallest tree in the Schönbuch. A stone marks the path of the 1999 Lothar storm, which felled many trees here. A 3.5-kilometre woodland teaching trail climbs the northern slope from the Scheerwässere car park near Glashütte. Seven information boards explain the hill’s geology, flora and fauna, passing a sandstone quarry, a small pond and old settlement sites. The route also follows the Neuhauser Wand escarpment and offers a children’s play area and a picnic spot. The path takes about one and a half to two hours to walk and shows how the land has been shaped by people and nature over centuries.
