Heimatmuseum Gerstungen

The Werratalmuseum stands in the old Schloss in Gerstungen, a village in the Wartburgkreis of central Thüringen. Founded in 1932, it occupies the former residence of local rulers and keeps the memory of crafts alive. The building itself, with its stone walls and slate roofs, forms a quiet backdrop to the displays inside. The museum grew from the collecting passion of Arno Volland, a local historian who lived from 1888 to 1968. His finds—bones, urns, tools and jewellery—fill the historical section and are set beside maps and panels. A working model of the Schloss shows how the place looked before it became a prison annexe. In another wing, life-size replicas of prison cells recall the building’s later use by the justice authorities. Visitors walk through rooms arranged by theme. The textile section shows every step from flax to linen, ending with a full-sized loom and finished cloth. The pottery room displays Werrakeramik with its bright glazes and playful inscriptions on bowls and jugs. In the geology corner, visitors see the rocks and minerals that shaped the region’s economy. Outside, the Schloss grounds remain peaceful, offering a place to pause after the rich variety inside.
