Burg Oberried

Burg Oberried was a small medieval motte-and-bailey castle near the monastery in Oberried, a village on the edge of the Black Forest. It stood on a low mound about twenty metres across and three metres high, built up from earth. Only the raised platform remains today, rising above the surrounding fields. Archaeologists believe the castle had a single wooden tower on top of the mound. In 2017 another well-preserved motte was discovered close by, showing how common these small fortifications once were. Written records mention the site in the 12th century, linking it to local noble families. Visitors walk along quiet country lanes to reach the grassy mound. A wooden fence now protects the site, and an information board explains what once stood there. The view stretches over meadows and distant hills, giving a sense of how the castle once commanded the valley. The second motte lies nearby, hidden in woodland, waiting to be explored.
