St Ia's Church, St Ives

St Ia’s Church stands on a gentle rise above the slate-roofed lanes of St Ives, its granite tower rising over the town’s skyline. Built between 1410 and 1434 in the Devonian style, it replaced an earlier chapel of ease for the parish of Lelant. The tower reaches over 80 feet and has four stages, while the body of the church spreads wide but not tall. An outer south aisle was added around 1500 by the Trenwith family and now serves as the Lady Chapel. Inside, a 15th-century granite font is carved with four angels holding shields. The church holds notable memorials and furnishings. A brass to a Trenwith family member from 1463 marks one of the oldest surviving brasses in Cornwall. In the chancel, two complete benches stand alongside standard bench ends, and a monument to the Hitchens family was added in 1815. The pipe organ dates from 1831 and has been restored several times, most recently in 1993. A late medieval lantern cross, ten-and-a-half feet high, stands in the churchyard. Visitors find a quiet space of grey stone and warm wood, where light falls through clear windows onto carved angels and memorial brasses. The Lady Chapel holds a modern statue by Barbara Hepworth, contrasting with the older stonework. The organ’s pipes rise behind the altar, silent but speaking of past music. From the churchyard, views stretch over rooftops to the harbour below, where fishing boats sway in the tide.
