Sonntagskarspitze

The Sonntagskarspitze is a 2,350-metre peak in the Rottenmann Tauern range of the Austrian Alps. It stands on a ridge that runs north-west from the higher Grosser Bösenstein. To the north it meets the Dreistecken, separated by the Gamsscharte col at 2,215 metres. A shorter spur goes south-west from the summit, crossing the Seitenstallpolster col and dropping to Wurzleiten and First before the valley floor.

The route follows the marked trail numbered 944 from Edelrautehütte hut. The climb rewards walkers with wide views across the surrounding peaks and down to the Gefrorenersee lake below the north-east slopes. The lake lies at 2,076 metres and adds a still blue mirror to the high alpine scene.

On the summit visitors find a small cross and room to stand above the steep drops. The ridge walk offers airy traverses and brief scrambles where the path narrows. Below, the valleys fall away into forests and meadows that change colour with the seasons.
