Kulturfabrik

The Kulturfabrik is a small-arts theatre in Koblenz’s Lützel district. It occupies a late-19th-century building once home to Europe’s largest envelope factory, founded in 1862. The site was heavily damaged during the Second World War and later stood empty until the 1980s.
The theatre began in 1980 when the dance-theatre group Regenbogen converted the derelict factory into a cultural centre. A citizens’ initiative took over in 1996, forming the KUFA GmbH that still runs the venue today. It was the first independent theatre on the Middle Rhine and gave birth to the region’s first youth art school in 1991. The Koblenz Youth Theatre has rehearsal rooms there and mounts its productions on the main stage.
Visitors find a 350-seat theatre hall, an upstairs ballet studio and a gallery. The first floor also houses rehearsal spaces for local groups. Outside, summer open-air events take place on the nearby Fort Konstantin. Inside, regular programmes include cabaret evenings, live music and family shows such as ‘Kids in der Kufa’.
