Wiener Neustadt East airfield

Wiener Neustadt East Airport stands on the outskirts of Wiener Neustadt in Lower Austria, about 60 kilometres south of Vienna. The airfield opened in 1915 as the factory field of Österreichische Flugzeugfabrik. After the Second World War it closed, then reopened in 1972 when the Sport Flieger Club Austria took over. They rebuilt the airport and laid the asphalt runway still in use today. In 1998 Diamond Aircraft Industries bought a majority share and set up its headquarters on the field.
The airport has no scheduled flights today, though Tyrolean once operated Dash 7 services in the 1990s. Two aprons handle business jets and general aviation. Diamond Aircraft Industries, Austria’s best-known aircraft maker, keeps its main factories here. The Sport Flieger Club Austria still runs operations through its subsidiary Diamond SFCA Ges.m.b.H.
Visitors find two restaurants on the field and a small shopping area nearby. The southern apron serves business jets while the northern apron handles smaller private and training aircraft. Wiener Neustadt East Airport remains one of Europe’s oldest airfields, a working airfield rather than a tourist site.
