Curno

Curno lies in the Lombardy plain 6 kilometres southwest of Bergamo and 40 kilometres northeast of Milan. The small town sits on flat land crossed by the Brembo river, with the foothills of the Alps rising to the north. A quiet farming village for centuries, Curno grew into an industrial centre during Italy’s post-war economic boom. Since the 1990s new shopping malls have appeared along its edges. The place is worth a short stop for its contrast between old and new. The old centre still shows narrow streets lined with stone houses from the 19th century. Nearby factories and warehouses show the town’s industrial past and present. The Brembo valley offers quiet walks away from busy roads. Visitors find a small parish church in the old core and modern retail parks on the outskirts. The riverbank path leads east towards Bergamo’s hills. From the town square the Alps appear on clear days, framing the flat plain.
