Schul- und Kaplanhaus, Baad
The Schul- und Kaplanhaus Baad is a protected historic building in the Austrian Kleinwalsertal valley. It stands in the small village of Baad, surrounded by high mountains and alpine meadows. The house was originally built in 1714 and served both as a school and as living quarters for the chaplain. The building is worth visiting for its long educational history. From 1770 onwards, lessons were held there by a clergyman. In 1814 a classroom was added at the rear of the building, followed by a new classroom in 1836. The school closed in 1968 when only sixteen pupils remained. The chaplaincy itself had been vacant since 1879. Visitors find a simple stone house with modest rooms that recall its dual purpose. The original layout still shows where teaching took place and where the chaplain lived. A plaque commemorates Jodok Heim, the village priest who died in 1830 after serving the community for many years. The quiet setting and the building’s unassuming exterior contrast with its rich past.
