Fratton Park

Fratton Park stands on Portsea Island in Portsmouth, Hampshire, as the historic home of Portsmouth Football Club. Opened in 1899, it is the club’s only ground and the sole professional English football stadium not on the British mainland. The ground began as a four-and-a-half-acre market garden site near Goldsmith Avenue, once part of Milton Farm. Early plans included two stands and terraces, with the name chosen to suggest proximity to Fratton railway station, though the walk was longer than advertised. By 1900 the ground had turnstiles, dressing rooms and committee rooms, and was regarded as one of the finest south of London. The first match in September 1899 drew 4,141 spectators and ended in a 2–0 win over Southampton. The ground’s development reflects key moments in English football. In 1905 Sir John Brickwood funded a mock-Tudor pavilion with a clock tower and balcony, parts of which remain. The 1925 South Stand, designed by Archibald Leitch, introduced seating above and standing below pitch level and included a tunnel to the pitch. By 1935 the North Stand raised capacity to over 58,000, funded partly by the sale of defender Jimmy Allen. Floodlights were installed in 1956 and Fratton Park hosted the first Football League match under artificial light that February. The stadium also hosted an Olympic football match in 1948 and an England international in 1903. Visitors find a compact stadium with a strong matchday atmosphere. The surviving mock-Tudor pavilion and Leitch-designed stands frame the pitch, while the Fratton End remains a standing terrace. The ground is known affectionately as ‘The Old Girl’ or ‘Fortress Fratton’ for its intense home support. Nearby Milton Park, opened in 1912, lies just 127 metres east on Priory Crescent. Despite several redevelopment plans over the decades, the ground retains its character and close connection to the club’s history.
