Kath. Filialkirche hl. Nikolaus

The late-Romanesque branch church of Saint Nicholas stands in the southern part of Feichsen, a village that belongs to the market town of Purgstall on the Erlauf river in Lower Austria. Built between 1220 and 1260, it was first administered by the parish of Steinakirchen, then by Reinsberg from 1291 until 1973, and finally linked to Purgstall in the second half of the 18th century. A fire in 1752 damaged the building, but a thorough restoration between 1972 and 1973 by architect Wilhelm Zotti repaired the roof, rebuilt the bell tower and reshaped the interior. The outside shows a simple plastered façade with tall round-arched slit windows from the original period and larger windows added after the fire. The west end has no door; instead, a round-arched north door from 1903–04 carries a 16th-century iron fitting. The south side shelters a small sacristy under a lean-to roof, extended westward in the same years. The roof itself is half-hipped over the nave and continuous over the square choir, ending in a bold round apse topped by a shingle-clad bell turret with a steep pyramid roof. Inside, the nave now has a flat wooden ceiling installed in 1972–73, while the narrower choir keeps its cross-ribbed vault and deep apse with a domed ceiling. A round-arched doorway in the south choir wall leads through a barrel-vaulted passage to the sacristy, its door also fitted with a 16th-century lock. The furnishings include a block altar with a carved Crucifixion group from the early 17th century, side altars bearing canvas images of the Immaculate Conception and Saint Joseph, and a mid-15th-century statue of Saint Nicholas flanked by putti from the same period.
