Filialkirche hl. Maximilian, Göming

The Filialkirche Göming stands in the small village of Kirchgöming, just outside Salzburg in the municipality of Göming. Built mainly in the 15th century, it traces its origins to the 11th century and is dedicated to Saint Maximilian. The church is protected as a historic monument and is surrounded by a legend linking it to Saint Wolfgang, who is said to have left a footprint in a stone outside. The church’s long history is reflected in its architecture and artefacts. The 15th-century Gothic extension added a ribbed vault and stained-glass windows, while the baroque altar features an image of Saint Maximilian. A stone outside bears the imprint of Saint Wolfgang’s foot, believed to have healing powers. The church also holds inscriptions from pilgrims dating back to 1712. Inside, the nave has a barrel vault added in the 19th century, replacing an older wooden ceiling. The stone floor was laid with materials from the former Nikolauskirche in Oberndorf. Outside, the apse’s rounded wall holds the footprint stone, now part of a peace trail linking themes of sustainability and reflection.
