Adelssitz Illerbachen
The Adelssitz Illerbachen stands on the Jägerberg, a small plateau about 20 metres above the village centre of Illerbachen. The site lies one kilometre south of Berkheim in the Biberach district of Oberschwaben. The Herren von Illerbachen built the seat in the Middle Ages, but nothing of the original structure remains today. The plateau overlooks the surrounding countryside, giving a clear view of the Iller valley below. Local records still use the name Jägerberg for the spot where the castle once stood. Historians recognise the site as an important example of a medieval noble residence in Oberschwaben. Stefan Uhl’s 1986 study of castles and stately homes in the Biberach district describes the Adelssitz Illerbachen in detail. The book places the seat within the broader tradition of Swabian aristocratic architecture of the 13th and 14th centuries. Although the physical traces have vanished, the name Illerbachen itself preserves the memory of the noble family that once ruled from here. The site remains a quiet reminder of the region’s feudal past. Visitors reach the plateau by a short walk from the village centre. The path climbs gently through fields and meadows, offering glimpses of the Iller valley along the way. At the top, the open space provides a wide outlook over Berkheim and the surrounding countryside. The absence of ruins allows an unobstructed view of the landscape. The place is peaceful, with only the sound of wind and birds breaking the silence. It is a spot for reflection on the area’s history rather than for grand views or elaborate remains.
