Town hall in Enns

The Rathaus Enns stands in the heart of Enns, a town in Upper Austria’s Linz-Land district. Its setting is the main square, a broad open space framed by historic buildings. The building itself is protected as a listed monument, marking its importance to the region’s heritage. The building’s history goes back to the 15th century, when it became one of the first town halls in Austria. The second site, now Hauptplatz 19, was given to the town by Emperor Friedrich III in 1489. A major Renaissance rebuild between 1547 and 1551 added a grand portal, richly decorated windows, an arcaded courtyard and a dated bell. The present baroque façade dates from later alterations. Visitors find a dignified town hall with a strong rounded bay on the corner. The main façade facing the square has five richly detailed bays, while the side towards Mauthausnerstraße shows eight bays of similar grandeur. The stone base gives the building a solid, grounded appearance, typical of 17th-century civic architecture.
