Bramley Bank

Bramley Bank is a 10.3-hectare local nature reserve in Upper Shirley, within the London Borough of Croydon. The land belongs to Croydon Council and is managed by the London Wildlife Trust. It contains acid grassland, woodland and a pond, each supporting different plant and animal life. The reserve sits alongside urban streets yet remains a quiet green space. Access points are found on Riesco Drive and Broadcombe. The site supports a variety of wildflowers such as common violets and enchanter’s nightshade. In spring, bluebells create colourful carpets beneath the trees. The woodland is mainly oak, ash and sycamore, providing cover for birds and insects. Around the pond, yellow flag and flote grass grow at the water’s edge. Wildlife includes nuthatches, song thrushes, purple hairstreak butterflies, yellow meadow ants and pipistrelle bats. Visitors walk along grassy paths that wind through grassland and woodland. The pond offers a place to pause and watch dragonflies and damselflies. Woodland birds flit between the trees, while butterflies drift over open patches. The reserve is small but rich in detail, showing how nature persists even beside the city.
