Kath. Pfarrkirche St. Georgen an der Stiefing

The parish church of St Georgen an der Stiefing stands beside the old castle in the market town of the same name in southern Styria. The church and its former graveyard are listed monuments. A church has stood on the site since at least 1147, when it was recorded as the private chapel of the Counts of Plain. The present building dates mainly from a rebuilding between 1750 and 1755. In 1906 the church was almost entirely demolished and rebuilt under the parish priest Graf Des Enffans d’Avernas. The west tower still shows traces of its medieval origins. Inside, the three-aisled nave is covered by a barrel vault with transverse ribs. The high altar was made in 1906 in a neo-Renaissance style. The organ case dates from 1768. On the gallery hang two large paintings: a late 18th-century Crucifixion and a heavily restored Fourteen Holy Helpers. The choir ends in three sides of an octagon and is flanked by sacristy and chapel. Outside, a 16th-century relief shows the Trinity, and several Renaissance and early Baroque gravestones line the walls.
