Stanmore Country Park
Stanmore Country Park is a 30.7-hectare public park in Stanmore, within the London Borough of Harrow. It serves as a Local Nature Reserve and a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation. The land once belonged to an eighteenth-century mansion called Warren House. In 1937 it became public open space under Middlesex County Council and Harrow Urban District Council. Later it passed to the Greater London Council before being transferred to Harrow London Borough Council in 1976. The park is worth visiting for its ancient woodland features and wildlife. Part of the park contains wild service trees and mature hornbeam, indicating its ancient origins. Grassland areas support common bent, Yorkshire fog and tufted hair grass in damp spots. Mammals such as Reeves’s muntjac and red fox live here, with occasional sightings of European badger, weasel and wild boar. Birdlife includes several tit species, blackbirds, magpies, crows, tawny owls, buzzards, sparrowhawks and kestrels. Visitors find paths leading through grassland and woodland areas. Access points are available from Kerry Avenue and Dennis Lane. The park offers a quiet place to walk among mature trees and open meadows. Wildlife can often be seen during early morning or late afternoon visits. The mix of habitats provides a peaceful retreat within Greater London.
