Haus Vogelsang
Haus Vogelsang stands on a small island in a large pond south of the Lippe river in Datteln-Ahsen. The medieval stronghold was built on an artificial island and surrounded by a moat fed by the Klosterner Mühlenbach. The estate passed through many noble families over centuries, including the von Rechede, Dobbe and von Brabeck, before the von Twickel family took possession in the early 19th century. A stone lock was added during the Lippe river’s canalisation between 1816 and 1826. The estate is now a protected monument and houses offices and technical facilities. The surviving buildings include a two-storey Baroque wing from the 18th century with a yellow façade and eleven window bays. Its south-east corner features a square tower topped with a curved slate roof. A half-timbered barn from the same period stands in the outer bailey, its roof timbers reused from older structures. Nearby is a brick farm building with a low hipped roof and a small garden area. The old water mill, powered by the diverted stream, has a tiled hipped roof and brick infill panels. Visitors can walk across a long wooden bridge to the island where the original house once stood. The moat still encloses most of the site, though part has been filled in. The island is now wooded, and only foundation remains mark the vanished medieval building. The outer bailey’s buildings and the mill can be viewed from outside the moat, giving a clear sense of the estate’s former scale and organisation.
