Stranraer Museum

Stranraer Museum sits in the small town of Stranraer in Dumfries and Galloway. The building began as a town hall in 1777 and later housed a court and corn market. After becoming a fire station in 1879, it now tells the story of Wigtownshire. The museum holds local history exhibits including Scotland’s oldest surviving plough. The front of the building faces George Street and shows a ship carved above the door with the words ‘Tutissima Statio’. A clock tower rises above, given by a town clerk in 1936, topped with a weather vane. Inside, modern windows flank the old entrance and the museum door sits to the right. The rear wing from the 1850s still shows blocked arches and a plain door. The slate roof and gabled east front complete the historic look.
