Schloss Unterweilbach

Schloss Unterweilbach stands in the village of Unterweilbach, part of the municipality of Hebertshausen in the Dachau district of Upper Bavaria. First recorded in 802 as a landed estate beside a stream, the site has been shaped by noble families for more than eleven centuries. The present building combines a 17th-century manor with older walls, including traces of a medieval chapel and tower. Nearby, a Baroque parish church and an 18th-century clergy house add to the ensemble. The estate passed through the Schluder, Mandl and Spreti families, each leaving its mark on the buildings and the surrounding farmlands. In 1690–92 a new palace was erected, and in 1734 it became the property of the Counts of Spreti. After the abolition of noble privileges in 1848, the family retained the main house while selling outlying farms. Restoration between 1997 and 2010 uncovered the foundations of a Romanesque chapel and a keep within the present walls. Visitors find a two-storey main block under a hipped roof, built in 1692 around older stonework. Inside, a late-Gothic chapel dedicated to Saint Martin holds furnishings updated in the 19th century. South of the palace a long wing with a mansard roof and north of it a coach house with a hipped roof frame a gravel courtyard. The Catholic filial church of the Nativity of Mary stands nearby, its core from 1596 but largely rebuilt in 1741 by Johann Göttschl, its tower crowned by an octagonal cupola. An 18th-century clergy house completes the group, offering quiet walks among the old farm buildings and orchards.
