Pitztal

The Pitztal is a high alpine valley in Tyrol, Austria, running between the Ötztal and Kaunertal valleys. The Pitze river flows through it, fed by the Gries waterfall in the upper section before reaching the Rifflsee lake at 2,232 metres. The valley’s average flow rate is 2.7 cubic metres per second, creating a steady presence of water. Agriculture and tourism shape the local economy, with visitors drawn to both the natural scenery and the valley’s amenities. Three villages lie along the valley floor: Wenns at 962 metres, Sankt Leonhard at 1,366 metres, and Arzl at 880 metres. The Pitztal underground funicular is a key attraction, rising from Mittelberg at 1,736 metres to the Mittelbergferner mountain at 2,841 metres. This lift makes the high alpine terrain accessible for sightseeing and outdoor activities. The Rifflsee lake sits just below the upper course of the Pitze, offering a calm setting surrounded by steep slopes. The Gries waterfall marks the start of the river’s dramatic descent into the valley. Visitors can follow paths beside the river or around the lake to experience the alpine environment. Paths lead from the valley floor up to higher viewpoints, where the Rifflsee lake and surrounding peaks come into view. The contrast between the green lower slopes and the rocky high mountains is striking. The funicular’s upper station provides panoramic views of the Pitztal and neighbouring valleys. Alpine meadows and forested areas cover much of the lower valley, while glaciers crown the highest ridges. The valley’s quiet villages offer a place to rest after exploring the open landscapes.
