Biddlesden Abbey

Biddlesden Abbey stands in Buckinghamshire as the remains of a Cistercian monastery founded in 1147 by Ernald de Bosco, steward to the Earl of Leicester. The first monks arrived from Garendon Abbey, but Ernald’s claim to the land led to years of legal disputes before they could settle. By the late 12th century the abbey faced scandal when Abbot William Wibert was removed for fraud and immorality. Henry III later provided wood for new choir stalls, showing the church was being rebuilt in the 13th century. Disputes over tithes with Wappenham parish continued for generations. Despite its modest income of £125 and only eleven monks, the house survived dissolution in 1536 by paying a fine. After the Dissolution the abbey passed to Thomas Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton, and was bought by Sir Robert Peckham. In the 1730s the medieval ruins were cleared and a grand new house, Biddlesden Park, was built on the site. The park itself is now Grade II listed, though only a few scattered stones recall the abbey’s original walls. Among those buried on the site were four successive Barons Zouche, including William la Zouche the third, who died in 1396. Their tombs once lay within the abbey church. Visitors today walk through Biddlesden Park, a country house set in landscaped grounds. A few weathered fragments of the abbey’s masonry survive, though none remain in their original positions. The Grade II listed house shows fine Georgian architecture, standing where the monks once prayed. The parkland offers quiet walks among mature trees and gentle slopes. From the house there are wide views across the Buckinghamshire countryside. The site quietly preserves traces of both monastic life and later grand living.
