St Mary and St Peter's Church, Wilmington

St Mary and St Peter’s Church stands in the village of Wilmington, at the foot of the South Downs in East Sussex. Founded in the late 11th century, it served villagers and monks from the nearby Wilmington Priory, to which it was once physically connected. The church has been restored many times, most notably by the Victorian architects Paley and Austin and again after a fire in 2002. It is listed Grade I for its exceptional interest and national importance. A 1,600-year-old yew tree in the churchyard hints at the site’s ancient sacred use. The Wilmington Madonna, a carved figure once on the outside wall, may also reflect earlier beliefs. The building shows layers of history in its architecture. The chancel is Norman, with round-headed windows and traces of a south doorway. The nave windows are Decorated Gothic, while the east window belongs to the Perpendicular style. Paley and Austin added the elaborate chancel arch and reseated the church in the 19th century. Inside, a Jacobean pulpit with a sounding board contrasts with the plain Norman stonework. The font is 14th century, and inward-facing stone seats in the chancel date from the church’s earliest days. Visitors find a quiet country church with strong historical presence. The flint walls, thick yet splayed for light, enclose a nave, south aisle, north transept and chancel. A weatherboarded bellcote with shingled spire marks the west end. The north porch and diagonal buttresses at the east end show later reinforcements. Painted panels, monuments and a king post roof add to the interior character. The churchyard holds the ancient yew and the preserved Wilmington Madonna, both silent witnesses to centuries of worship and change.
