Schloss Klamm

Burg Klamm stands on a steep hillside above Obsteig in the Tyrolean Alps. The restored medieval fortress sits at 870 metres, surrounded on three sides by sheer slopes. Its most striking feature is the massive round bergfried with its square battlements. Below the tower lies the palas, built on a five-sided plan and separated from the tower by a deep neck ditch. The bergfried dates from about 1220–1230 and is one of Tirol’s finest examples of early medieval masonry. Inside, a small chapel was added in the mid-17th century in honour of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. The palas shows three distinct building phases: its lowest storey matches the tower’s construction, the middle storey has smoothed mortar joints and tufa quoins, and the upper storey, added early in the 16th century, uses irregular rubble infill. A late-medieval curtain wall now joins the two parts. Visitors cross a reconstructed wooden bridge over the outer moat to reach the new gatehouse. The tower’s high entrance and upper fighting platform face away from the slope, protected by a line of 2.5-metre-high rectangular battlements. From the palas terrace there is a sheer drop to the valley below, while the curtain wall ends abruptly at a rock face on the north-west corner. The site served as Schloss Brauneck in the long-running television series Der Bergdoktor.
