Großwand
The Großwand stands at 2 415 metres in the Annaberg-Lungötz municipality within Salzburg district. East of the summit the land rises to 2 387 metres only one kilometre away, while to the west the terrain is gentler and forested. Radstadt, the nearest town, lies thirteen and a half kilometres south across rolling foothills. The massif forms part of the Gosaukamm range and is recognised for its sharp ridges and steep faces. Peaks such as the Große Bischofsmütze and the Mandlkogel rise nearby, while caves and rock formations punctuate the slopes. The area receives heavy rainfall—over two metres a year—so streams carve deep gullies through the limestone. Winter temperatures can fall to minus ten degrees, yet July brings brief warmth around fourteen degrees. Visitors find a high-alpine world of conifer forests and open rock terraces leading to the summit ridge. The Großwand itself is a broad limestone face that catches the morning light. From the top the eye travels across the Totes Gebirge and Dachstein groups on clear days, while the valleys below show scattered alpine meadows and small settlements. The climb rewards with wide views over Salzburg’s mountain backbone and the Gosau lakes glinting in the distance.
