St German's Church

St German’s Church stands in Adamsdown, Cardiff, on the corner of Star Street and Metal Street. Built in the 19th century, it is a Grade I listed building dedicated to St Germanus of Auxerre. The church replaced earlier structures, including a converted barn and an iron building, as the area grew. Lord Tredegar donated the land and laid the foundation stone in 1882. Designed by George Frederick Bodley of Bodley & Garner, construction lasted from 1881 to 1884. The church is recognised for its tall, spacious and elegant architecture. High on the south wall of the chancel is a finely carved and painted organ case, restored to its former glory. The organ was given by the Rev. Francis Edward Nugee, who served as a curate in Roath during the 1880s. Nearby stand the school and clergy house, built at the same time by the same architects. The church was consecrated in March 1886, and the parish of St German was created in the same month. Inside, visitors find a well-preserved interior with notable architectural details. The organ case remains a highlight, along with the overall design by Bodley. The church has also featured in media, including broadcasts by BBC Radio 4 and scenes from a 2026 Channel 4 drama. The surrounding area includes the adjacent school and clergy house, adding to the site’s historical coherence.
