Church of Holy Agatha
The Roman Catholic parish church of Meiningen stands inside a walled cemetery in the village of Meiningen, near Feldkirch in Vorarlberg. It is dedicated to Saint Agatha and belongs to the Rankweil deanery of the Diocese of Feldkirch. The building has been protected as a historic monument since the 19th century. The present church replaced an earlier chapel first mentioned in 1477. In 1609 it became a parish church, and in 1724 it was lengthened and given a porch by Johann Jakob Hutsch, owner of a bleach works. A flat ceiling was replaced by a vault in 1802, and the tower was added in 1823 by master builders Alois Weiß and Josef Allgäuer. The interior was restored again in 1961–62. The simple Baroque structure has a rectangular nave and a narrower, five-sided chancel under one roof. A tall tower rises at the south side of the chancel, and the main door is sheltered by a small porch. Inside, the high altar of 1759 shows a painting of Saint Agatha’s glory by Franz Josef Walser. The organ dates from 1890 and a bell from 1610 bears the name of Leonhard Ernst.
