St Mary's and St Michael's Church, Burleydam

St Mary’s and St Michael’s Church stands in the quiet village of Burleydam, two kilometres south-east of Combermere Abbey. Built in 1769 by the Cotton family, it began as a simple brick rectangle before later additions gave it a cross shape. Two transepts, a chancel and a new west wall were added in 1886, altering the building’s appearance. Dr Johnson visited in 1774 and called the church ‘neat and plain’ with handsome communion plate. The exterior shows brick walls under a slate roof with pilaster buttresses and a gable clock. Inside, a Gothic monument honours Stapleton Cotton, 1st Viscount Combermere, who died in 1865. The east window’s stained glass is by Kempe, dated 1908, and a two-manual organ was built by Peter Conacher of Huddersfield. Iron gates and railings in the churchyard once belonged to Lleweni Hall’s private chapel, moved here after Cotton inherited the estate in 1769. The railings themselves were praised by Dr Johnson as ‘of great elegance’. The churchyard entrance is framed by early 18th-century cast-iron piers and gates, Grade II listed. The north porch carries a carving of Saint George slaying the dragon above its round arch. Arched windows light the transepts and chancel, while the triple east window repeats the pilaster buttresses seen on the west front. A stone cross crowns the gable, marking the simple dignity of this small Cheshire church.
