Schärding-Suben airfield
The Flugplatz Schärding-Suben is a small civil sports airfield in the Innviertel region of Upper Austria. It sits five kilometres south of Schärding and twelve kilometres from the Passau/Suben border crossing. The site includes a hangar built in 1995 whose bright roof carries the airfield’s radio call sign in large letters. A second hangar was added a few years after the airfield opened, and in 1978 an 800-by-23-metre asphalt runway was laid. The airfield is home to the Schärdinger Fliegerunion and runs its own flying school. Since 2014 it has hosted the annual Sunrise-FlyIn, when many aircraft take off at dawn. Before each gliding course begins, visitors can try a winch launch in a glider through the ‘Von 0 auf 100’ event. The rescue helicopter Christophorus Europa 3 is also based here, covering a gap in emergency cover for Lower Bavaria around Passau. Beside the runway stands Patrick’s Villa, a bungalow with guest rooms and dormitory attic beds. Across the field is an airfield restaurant, and the firm Luftfahrttechnik Pucher has its headquarters on site. The airfield building also houses the family business Bernhard Scheurecker, which produces aerial photographs and postcards. The surrounding Lindet forest and the former wet meadow called Kühdobel give the place a quiet, rural setting.
