Hunting lodge (Karapancsa)

The Karapancsa hunting-lodge complex stands in the southern lowlands of Lower Austria, beside the Danube. It consists of a large and a small neo-Baroque castle, together with farm buildings and a landscaped park. The setting is flat meadows and dense Danube flood-plain forests alive with deer and rare birds. The place became famous after 1867 when Archduke Albert turned the estate into a model farm and hunting ground. In 1878 the ornithologist Alfred Brehm and Crown Prince Rudolf visited to study the region’s wildlife; Rudolf later called it paradise in his travel notes. From 1895 Archduke Friedrich and his wife Archduchess Isabella entertained crowned heads here. Their guests included Emperor Franz Joseph, Kaiser Wilhelm II, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Count Zsigmond Széchenyi. Isabella herself photographed every hunt and village scene, leaving a vivid record of late-19th-century life. Today the restored interiors of the Great Castle house a hotel while the Small Castle shelters a permanent exhibition on forestry, game-keeping and fishing. Visitors walk a garden-history trail that passes orchard varieties, a hunting display, a chestnut avenue and the old farmyards.
