Burg Iversheim

Burg Iversheim once stood in Iversheim, a district of Bad Münstereifel in North Rhine-Westphalia. Its exact location is thought to have been north of the local church. The building’s appearance remains unknown today. In the 14th century an aristocratic family held the castle as a fief from Peter von Kronenburg. After the Kronenburg line died out, the castle passed into the hands of the Counts of Blankenheim. By 1610 a member of the Ahr zu Antweiler family appeared as its occupant at the regional assembly. By 1732 the Manderscheid-Blankenheim counts had become its owners. The last record of Burg Iversheim appears in 1822, when an aristocratic seat was still listed in the district records of Rheinbach. After that date the trail disappears. Archaeologists have found no traces of the walls or towers. Written sources describe only the changing holders of the property. The castle’s brief life spanned little more than four centuries. Visitors today walk through quiet streets in Iversheim, passing the old church that once stood beside the vanished fortress. A small information board beside the churchyard mentions the castle’s name and its vanished walls. The surrounding countryside of rolling hills and farmland gives little hint of the medieval stronghold. Only the name Burg Iversheim on modern maps keeps the memory alive.
