Muttekopf

The Muttekopf is a 2,431-metre grassy peak in the Peischel group of the Allgäuer Alps. It stands east of the Wildmahdspitze above the village of Holzgau in the Lechtal valley. Unlike most nearby summits, its slopes are made of Lias limestone and marly Fleckenmergel. The contrast between its green flanks and the rugged limestone ridges around it is striking. Climbers reach the top in about four hours from Holzgau. The route demands sure-footedness and a head for heights as it winds through steep grass and slabby sections. The final ridge offers a narrow crest with drop-offs on both sides. Views stretch across the Lechtal to the Allgäu foothills and the high peaks of the Lechtal Alps. The descent follows the same path back to Holzgau. Walkers can extend the day by continuing to the Wildmahdspitze or exploring the high plateau below the Muttekopf. The mountain’s open grassy slopes and sweeping views make it a rewarding choice for those willing to tackle its exposed ridges.
