Teo Otto Theater
The Teo Otto Theater is the city theatre in Remscheid, a town in the Bergisches Land region. It stands 200 metres from the Remscheid town hall and is the largest and most important of the three theatres in the area. The theatre is home to the Bergischen Symphoniker, a symphony orchestra shared with nearby Solingen. It stages operas, concerts and musicals alongside its regular theatre programme. In 2001 the building was renamed after Teo Otto, a Remscheid stage designer born in 1904. Since 2003 the theatre has been protected as a historic monument. Each year it hosts the ‘Night of Sport’, honouring the city’s top athletes. Visitors find a 620-seat auditorium designed by Düsseldorf architect Ernst Huhn. The building opened in 1954 after two years of construction. Its programme ranges from classical plays to modern performances, with regular appearances by the Bergischen Symphoniker. The theatre’s exterior and interior reflect mid-20th-century design while remaining a lively cultural centre for the region.
