Filialkirche hl. Florian, Straßgang
The Florianikirche is a small Roman Catholic hilltop church in Graz’s 16th district, built on the Florianiberg, a 527-metre rise west of the city centre. The hill forms part of the Plabutsch-Buchkogel ridge and overlooks the southern districts of Webling, Straßgang and Seiersberg-Pirka. A stream called the Katzelbach flows past its northern base, feeding the Bad Straßgang spa below. The church stands above the city by nearly 200 metres, though today it is partly screened by surrounding woodland. A paved road and a signed walking route lead from Straßgang up to the summit. The church was raised in 1597 by Archduchess Maria Anna of Bavaria, wife of Archduke Karl II, replacing an earlier building. Its fame grew after a 1670 fire in the Sack district was said to have been quenched by prayers to Saint Florian, prompting a yearly pilgrimage on the first Sunday in May. Inside, the ceiling shows fifteen fresco scenes of the saint’s life by Georg Adam Echter. The high altar, carved in 1768 by Jakob Peyer, holds a statue of Florian pouring water onto the flames, crowned with the Styrian ducal hat. Side altars display images of other saints. Visitors reach the church along the Florianibergweg or drive up Florianibergstraße from Straßgang. From the forecourt there are wide views across southern Graz and the Grazer Feld. The interior is small but richly decorated, with elaborate stucco by Joseph Antonio Serenio and vivid frescoes overhead. The annual Florianisonntag festival still draws crowds for Mass and a fair. Below, the hillside paths connect to the Mariazeller long-distance trail and local routes down to the parish church and cemetery.
