Palais Corbelli-Schoeller

The Palais Corbelli-Schoeller stands in Vienna’s Innere Stadt district on Johannesgasse. Built between 1695 and 1709, it is attributed to Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt and has passed through many noble hands. The building began as a medieval structure before Count Johann Andreas Corbelli acquired it, later selling to Count Caraffa. Further owners included the Eskeles and Zang families before Sir Paul Eduard von Schoeller took possession in the late 19th century. The palace’s nine-bay front is divided by a five-bay central projection topped with a balustrade. Its rusticated ground floor rises to a piano nobile framed by giant pilasters. The main entrance features a large basket-arched portal with neobaroque doors and flanking columns supporting a small balcony. Inside, a two-flight neobaroque staircase leads to the principal floor, where rooms like the entrance hall and former ballroom show late-classicist and strict-historicist detailing. The building remains in the family of Schoeller’s adopted son Gustav Neufeldt-Schoeller. Since 1982 it has housed the Institute for the International Education of Students, directed by figures such as Saskia Stachowitsch. Its restrained façade and carefully preserved interiors offer a quiet contrast to the busy streets nearby.
