King's College Hospital

King’s College Hospital stands on Denmark Hill in the London Borough of Lambeth. It is a major teaching hospital and trauma centre, run by King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The hospital serves 700,000 people locally and acts as a specialist referral centre for millions across southern England. It shares its site with King’s College London School of Medicine and is part of the King’s Health Partners academic health science centre. Queen Camilla was born here in 1947. The hospital began as a small training facility in 1840 before moving to its present site in 1913. The hospital’s history reflects advances in medicine and public health. In 1877, Joseph Lister performed the first major elective surgery under antiseptic conditions here. The move to Denmark Hill in 1913 introduced modern ventilation, electric clocks and one of the UK’s first internal phone systems. During the First World War, part of the hospital became the 4th London General Hospital for military casualties. A private wing was added in 1937 to care for wealthier patients. The hospital also treated air-raid casualties in the Second World War without sustaining a direct hit. Visitors approach through several entrances, including the Golden Jubilee Wing Entrance on Bessemer Road. The hospital grounds contain the Hambleden Wing, Denmark Wing and Cheyne Wing, each with its own access. A new outpatient unit opened in 2022 with 48 consulting rooms and eight procedure rooms. A rooftop intensive care ward with space for six patients opened in 2026, designed with planting by Sarah Price and Nigel Dunnett. Across the road lies the Maudsley Hospital and the Institute of Psychiatry, where doctors collaborate on research. The site is linked to King’s College London’s Denmark Hill Campus and is served by Denmark Hill railway station.
