Hulton Abbey

Hulton Abbey stands in Abbey Hulton, a suburb of Stoke-on-Trent in the West Midlands. Founded in 1223 by Henry de Audley as a Cistercian daughter house of Combermere Abbey, it was the last of three such monasteries in Staffordshire. The abbey occupied a quiet spot on the eastern side of the upper Trent valley, chosen for its remoteness. Its small community farmed sheep and ran a tannery and fulling-mill to stay afloat. By the mid-14th century the monks were also making encaustic tiles and working iron and coal. Yet the house remained one of the poorest in the county, its annual income falling from over £26 in 1291 to £14 by 1354. The abbey’s fortunes declined further during the Black Death and the English Reformation. In 1535 its income of £87 should have led to suppression, but Henry VIII allowed it to continue in exchange for a fine. Three years later the last abbot surrendered the site, and the buildings were stripped of lead and stone. Today only foundations and buried walls remain, though excavations have uncovered the church, chapter house, dormitories and refectory. The chapter house, built in 1270, still shows some of the earliest bar tracery windows in Britain. Artefacts found in the graveyard include a pilgrim’s staff and a wax seal from Rome. Visitors walk among the exposed stone footings of the nave and north aisle, where the church once stood. The square cloister once linked the main buildings, with the chapter house on its eastern side. Archaeologists have also revealed the refectory, kitchen and dormitory ranges, though these survive mainly as buried features. The graveyard to the north-east has yielded 91 skeletons, including members of the Audley family. Finds such as a chalice and a Roman indulgence seal hint at the abbey’s wider connections. The remains are fragile and protected as a scheduled monument, cared for by Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
