Konradhaus Koblenz

The Konradhaus stands in Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein on the Kapuzinerplatz. Built in 1874 as a casino and officers’ home, it later served the Capuchin monastery and then a theatre. The Capuchins bought the building in 1930 and turned it into a training centre for their youth charity, the Seraphic Love Works. The Capuchins named the house after Konrad of Parzham. Between the house and the monastery they added a connecting wing topped by a statue of Konrad. After the youth home closed in 1991, the theatre moved into a side wing in 1996. Ingrid Sehorsch and Michael John Hamlett founded the theatre, staging ninety-nine productions including fifteen premieres before it ended its own shows in 2014. Today the theatre hall can still be rented, while a ballet school and a Pilates studio occupy other rooms. The building itself is a three-storey classical cube with rusticated ground-floor walls and smooth upper storeys once used as officers’ flats. Its hipped roof has new dormers. The Capuchin monastery next door shares the Kapuzinerplatz, forming a protected ensemble within the Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site.
