Filialkirche Hochart

The Filialkirche Hochart stands in the village of Hochart, part of the municipality of Pinkafeld in Burgenland. Its modest white walls rise behind a war memorial at the western corner of two roads in the village centre. The church replaced an earlier 19th-century building in 1970, when Tibor Brestyansky designed the present structure with its trapezoidal plan and sharply sloping roof. The building is notable for its clean lines and the way light enters through glass blocks beside the altar. A three-storey concrete bell tower joins the south-west corner, its lowest level housing the choir stair and the top floor holding the bells. The middle storey is open on two sides, allowing the sound to carry across the square. Inside, the raised altar area is lit from both sides and faces the singers’ gallery above the entrance. The slightly angled apse and the plain ambo create a calm space for worship. The church’s exterior concrete bands and interior surfaces give it a quiet, modern dignity that fits the small village setting.
