Kapelle Unserer lieben Frau von Altötting

The Chapel of Our Dear Lady of Altötting stands in Linz beside the former Ursuline convent, now the Ursuline Court. Built in 1695 on the old convent garden, it is an octagonal chapel topped by a curved, stepped bell roof. Inside, the dome is richly decorated with stucco by Girolamo Alfieri, completed the same year. The ceiling paintings from 1695 form an iconographic cycle of the life of Mary. At the crown, Mary is crowned in heaven, while oval panels show her birth, the Annunciation, the Presentation in the Temple, her Assumption, her death, the Golden Gate meeting with Anna, her Presentation in the Temple, and her Immaculate Conception. Visitors enter a small domed space where light falls on the white and gold stucco and the vivid frescoes. The chapel sits within the quiet courtyard of the Ursuline Court, a short walk from the city centre. Its restrained scale and careful decoration make it a calm place for reflection.
