Vogeltor

The Vogeltor stands in Augsburg’s old town on Oberer Graben, a short street near the eastern branch called Vogelmauer. It formed the main gate into the Jakobervorstadt, the quarter that now lies within the modern Innenstadt planning area. The gate was built in 1445 to replace a smaller wooden predecessor from 1374–75, which had a drawbridge across the city moat. The square brick tower rises four storeys above the street, its pointed arch passage covered by a three-part star-ribbed vault with a hanging keystone carved like a rosette. The roof was once flat but is now a tall hipped shape, giving the tower its distinctive silhouette. The city lists the building as a protected cultural monument. The tower’s history is marked by two dramatic moments. In the Second World War, Allied bombs on 25–26 February 1944 gutted the interior, leaving only the medieval arch intact. A stone plaque on the north side shows a stylised bird wreathed in flames and records the destruction. After the war the city rebuilt the gate by 1954, removing the damaged side wing. In 1966 a modern parapet was added on the city side, its sloping roof marking the line of the old moat and wall. The name may come from Mayor Konrad Vögelin, from a bird-catcher who lived nearby, or from flocks of birds seen during its laying of the foundation stone. Visitors today see the plain outer shell of the 15th-century tower and step through the pointed arch into the quiet lane beyond. Above the arch on the south face a large fresco shows a crucifixion group in a painted niche. On the north side the memorial plaque stands opposite, and both sides carry tall plastered pilasters shaped like half-funnels, each topped by stone figures. Two figures recall the story of the builder who proved the tower was straight by performing a bodily act that fell in a perfect line. The surrounding streets are lined with modern shops and cafés, yet the tower’s empty interior and the rooftop parapet still hint at its former role as a fortified gateway.
