Fernmeldeturm Bitburg

The Fernmeldeturm Bitburg is a 70-metre telecommunications tower standing in the southern part of Bitburg, close to the former Bitburg-Stadt railway station. It is not open to the public and was built as a standardised design. The tower carries directional radio links for official services as well as FM broadcasts for local listeners. Its concrete shaft rises above the flat landscape of the Eifel region. The tower’s main technical role is to relay secure communications for government and emergency networks. At the same time it feeds several commercial FM radio programmes into the airwaves for Bitburg and its surroundings. Engineers keep the equipment housed in the upper section operating around the clock to maintain clear signals. Visitors can see the tower from the nearby roads and footpaths, but no interior access is provided. The base sits on open ground with open fields stretching away in several directions. From the footpath that runs past the railway embankment there is a clear side-on view of the full concrete shaft and the aerial platforms above.
