St. Mary's Church, Carisbrooke

St Mary’s Church stands in Carisbrooke on the Isle of Wight, a medieval parish church built in the Norman period. Its stone tower rises above the village, holding a ring of ten bells. Eight of these bells were cast in 1921 by Gillet and Johnston of Croydon, and two more were added in 2002 by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. Inside, the church shelters a fine funeral monument to Margaret Seymour, Lady Wadham, aunt of Jane Seymour and wife of the island’s captain in the early 16th century. The building once shared its parish with St Nicholas in Castro and now also links with four other churches across the island. Alexander Ross, a notable Scottish writer, served as vicar here from 1634 until his death twenty years later. The church’s history is written in the lives and deaths of those buried within its walls. Lady Wadham lies here, as does William Keeling, who died in 1619 after discovering the Keeling Islands in the Indian Ocean. Sir William Stephens, who died in 1697, and Sir Henry Daly are also laid to rest in the churchyard. A two-manual organ built by Bevington in 1908 still stands at the west end, accompanied by a small practice organ and a piano. John T. Read served as organist around 1912, keeping the music alive in this quiet village setting. Visitors step into a place where centuries of worship and memory gather. The Norman arches frame the nave, while the tower’s bells still sound for Sunday services. The Lady Wadham monument shows delicate craftsmanship in alabaster and marble. Names on the memorials recall explorers, soldiers and local leaders who shaped the island’s past. The organ’s pipes rise behind the choir stalls, ready to fill the space with sound. Outside, the churchyard holds weathered stones that mark the resting places of those who once walked these lanes.
