Blaenavon Industrial Landscape

Blaenavon Industrial Landscape lies in the upper Afon Lwyd valley in Torfaen, South Wales. It is a large area of hills, valleys and former workings that UNESCO named a World Heritage Site in 2000. The site covers 3,290 hectares and contains the remains of ironworks, coal mines, tramroads and workers’ housing from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Iron production here rose from 39,600 tons in 1796 to 666,000 tons in 1852, supplying railways and factories worldwide. Transport was by horse-drawn tramroads, canals and steam railways that linked mines, quarries and furnaces. The Blaenavon Company leased the land in 1789 and built an industrial town around the ironworks. The landscape is important because it shows how early industry organised itself. UNESCO recognised it under two criteria: it illustrates the social and economic structure of 19th-century industry, and it is a remarkably complete example of an industrial landscape from that period. The site includes 24 scheduled monuments and 82 listed buildings, many of which have been conserved since inscription. A World Heritage Centre opened in 2008 to explain the area’s significance, and Blaenavon was the first cultural landscape inscribed in the United Kingdom. Visitors find the remains of six blast furnaces, casting houses and the 1839 water balance tower at the Blaenavon Ironworks. Nearby stands the Big Pit coal mine, now a museum where underground tours run. Early industrial buildings survive, including Ty-Mawr built for ironmaster Samuel Hopkins in 1791, St Peter’s Church of 1804 and the Blaenavon Workmen’s Hall of 1894. Waymarked footpaths follow the tracks of the earliest iron railways, and the restored Pontypool and Blaenavon steam railway has a station in the town centre. The landscape still carries traces of quarries, inclines and the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal used to move iron and coal.
