Church of the Assumption

The Roman Catholic parish church of Mariasdorf stands at the top of the village green in Mariasdorf, a small market town in Burgenland. It is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and belongs to the deanery of Pinkafeld in the diocese of Eisenstadt. The building has been under official protection since the 20th century. The church was begun in the late Middle Ages, with the choir added around 1400 and the nave completed in the late 15th century. After a fire in the mid-19th century it was rebuilt in Gothic Revival style between 1882 and 1899 under the plans of Emmerich Steindl. The interior was repainted in 1929 and the spire restored in 1972. Outside, the polygonal choir and the nave reach almost the same height. A five-sided stair turret clings to the south side of the choir, while a sacristy projects on the north. Inside, the three-bay nave is covered by ribbed vaults on clustered shafts. The two-bay choir has a net-ribbed vault over a three-eighths apse. The high altar, pulpit and font are colour-glazed majolica from the Zsolnay works in Pécs, installed in 1884.
