Ardstinchar Castle

Ardstinchar Castle stands on a rocky hill near the mouth of the River Stinchar in South Ayrshire. Built in the mid-15th century by Hugh Kennedy of Ardstinchar, it was once a wedge-shaped fortress with three square towers and a keep. The castle’s gatehouse faced north, while the keep occupied the southeast corner of the courtyard. Mary, Queen of Scots stayed there in 1563, and James V visited in 1529. The Kennedys lived in the castle for over a century before the estate passed to the Hamiltons. The castle’s decline began in the 18th century when its stone was reused to build a bridge, houses, and the King’s Arms Hotel in Ballantrae. Only fragments of the keep remain today, including a 15-metre-high tower with walls nearly a metre thick. A deep rock-cut trench once defended the north-east side, and another shallow trench protected the west. The ruins sit on a prominent outcrop, offering views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors find the remains of the keep and courtyard walls on the rocky summit. The main tower’s base still stands firm, while the battlement walls hint at the castle’s former strength. The site overlooks the River Stinchar and the coastal area where it meets the sea. The ruins are quiet now, but the history of Hugh Kennedy, Mary, Queen of Scots, and the Hamilton family lingers in the stones.
